Custom Staircases · St. Charles County and West St. Louis County
Staircases are where the carpentry shows
A staircase is the first thing a guest sees and the last thing most contractors want to touch. It is the work our family has done for three generations: replacing carpet with hardwood treads, swapping dated spindles for iron or clean square balusters, rebuilding newels, or building a new open-stringer stair for a remodel.
What's included
- Carpet-to-hardwood tread and riser conversions
- New spindles, balusters, newel posts and handrails
- Iron baluster retrofits
- Open-stringer and floating-look stairs
- Stair runners
- Landings, half-walls to railings
- Matching stain and finish to existing floors

Permits and inspections
Replacing treads and railings usually needs no permit; a new or relocated stair is structural and does. We tell you which applies.
St. Charles County's incorporated cities each run their own building division; unincorporated areas go through the county. We know all of them.

Straight answers, the same ones we give on the walkthrough.
How much does a staircase remodel cost?
It depends on whether we replace treads and railings or rebuild the stair, the wood species and the baluster style. We quote after a walkthrough.
How long does it take?
Most stair remodels are three to seven working days on site.
Can I keep using the stairs during the work?
Yes. We sequence treads so the stairs stay usable every evening.
Can you match my hardwood floors?
Yes. We stain samples on site before committing.
Carpet to hardwood: what is involved?
Carpet and padding come off, the existing treads are capped or replaced with hardwood, risers are painted or stained, and the railing is usually updated at the same time.
Iron or wood balusters?
Iron is the most requested look today and pairs with any wood. Square wood balusters suit craftsman and farmhouse styles. We bring samples.
Can you remove the half-wall and put in a railing?
Yes. It opens the stair and is a common part of a remodel.
Do stairs need a permit?
Treads and railings usually do not; a new or relocated staircase does. We tell you which before we quote.

Sean did an amazing job on our banister! He was so easy to work with and really brought our vision to reality. I am so happy we chose to work with SC2 Contracting. They were very honest, trustworthy and professional, I would 100% work with them again! 10/10 work.
Sean and John came in and turned my abysmal bathroom into something amazing. Great service, professional, timely and excellent at communicating. They will be back to do many other projects for me.
